Re: Visit Report as 2016 ASNR Outreach Professor to Peru

Dear Dr. Kucharczyk,

I am just arriving back home and eager to convey to you and the Committee members my exciting and rewarding experience as ASNR Outreach Professor to Peru for the last 10 days.

The Peruvian Society of Radiology this year was having a joint annual meeting in combination with the Interamerican College of Radiology (CIR) on September 8-10 at a local hotel in Lima. I contributed to the meeting’s excellent Neuroradiology symposium, sharing the duties with a “Neuroradiology Dream Team” (Dr. Raquel Del Carpio words) composed of Drs. Mauricio Castillo, Roy Riascos, Rafael Rojas and myself from United States, Raquel del Carpio, Maria del Pilar Cortes, Jorge Davila, Carlos Torres and Rafael Glikstein from Canada and Sonia Bermudez from Colombia. Here I presented a conference on Sellar and Parasellar Tumors and participated in two case discussion sessions (one on brain tumors and another on spinal lesions).

The second part of my visit to Peru was focused on direct teaching activities to the radiology residents and faculty at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) from Monday, September 12 to Wednesday, September 14 and to the radiology residents and faculty at the Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital on Thursday and Friday, Sept 15-16. At both institutions I opened and closed the 5 hour morning sessions with conferences and reviewed cases presented by the residents, discussing differential diagnosis and imaging approach to the shown lesions.

I presented at the INEN the following topics on Monday: Anatomy and Approach to Lesions of the Skull Base; Concepts and Clinical Application of RANO Criteria. I presented on Tuesday: Pediatric Brain Tumors by Age and Anatomic Location, and Imaging Correlation of the New WHO Brain Tumor Classification. On Wednesday I presented Imaging anatomy and lesions of the Suprahyoid Neck and case presentations in the morning. I then presented a joint conference for the Radiology and ENT Departments on Wednesday evening on Anatomy and Pathology of the Paranasal Sinuses.

I presented the following topics at the Rebagliati Martins Hospital: Thursday (Anatomy and lesions of the Jugular Foramen and Posterior Skull Base; Imaging of Cranial Nerves); Friday (Basic Concepts of Applied Diffusion and Perfusion; Concepts and Applications of Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Tractography).

I enjoyed dynamic sessions with excellent unknown cases brought up by the enthusiastic residents in both hospitals, with most of the cases centering on tumor pathology of the brain, skull base, face and head and neck. It was my impression that my participation in this important program was very well received. I am confident their evaluations and feedback will be positive for this program, which enhances the visibility and status of our society in Latin America and fills a pressing need for the benefit of the local residents.

Thank you for the opportunity to have this extraordinary educational experience as an ASNR Outreach Professor. I will surely look forward to contribute again my time and effort for this meaningful program in the near future.
